Burping

2-step visual guide — practical tips you can follow at 3am.

1

Over the shoulder

  • Hold baby upright with chin on your shoulder
  • Support their bottom with one hand, pat or rub back with the other
  • Use firm, steady pats — gentle taps don’t move the air
  • Burp cloth on your shoulder catches spit-up

Walk around while burping — the gentle movement helps bubbles rise.

2

Sitting and face-down

  • Lap sit: support chin and chest with one hand (palm on chest, fingers on chin), pat with the other
  • Face-down: lay across your lap with head slightly elevated, pat gently
  • Try each position for 2-3 minutes — if no burp, move on
  • Breastfed babies often need less burping than bottle-fed

Not every feed produces a burp. Don’t stress if nothing comes up.
