Baby Changing

5-step visual guide — practical tips you can follow at 3am.

1

Prep your station

  • Lay out everything within arm’s reach before picking up baby
  • Clean diaper, wipes, barrier cream, spare outfit
  • Never leave baby unattended once they’re on the surface

Keep a pre-stocked caddy you can grab-and-go to any room.

2

Lift and position

  • Support head and neck — newborns can’t hold their own head up
  • Lay baby on their back on a padded surface
  • Keep one hand on baby’s chest at all times once they’re up there

A contoured changing pad with raised sides adds a safety margin.

3

Open up and swap

  • Unsnap onesie from bottom and fold up toward chest
  • Slide a clean diaper under baby BEFORE removing the dirty one — back tabs go under their waist
  • Unfasten dirty diaper, gently lift ankles, and use the front for a first rough wipe

For boys, drape a wipe over the front immediately to block surprise sprays.

4

Clean and protect

  • Always wipe front to back — as many wipes as it takes
  • Let the area air-dry for 30 seconds (biggest rash prevention hack)
  • Apply a thin layer of barrier cream only if you see redness
  • Roll dirty diaper into a ball — tabs act as tape — and toss in pail

Warm the wipe in your hands for a second. Cold wipes = loud protests.

5

Button up

  • Pull front of diaper up, fasten tabs snugly — two-finger gap between diaper and belly
  • For newborns, fold front below the umbilical stump
  • Snap onesie back up, pick baby up, wash your hands

It gets faster every single time. You’re already better than you think.
