Check cpsc.gov for recalls on your model. Slat spacing must be under 2-3/8 inches. No drop-side cribs - they're banned.

Waist height saves your back. Secure the changing pad with straps - babies roll sooner than you think.

Organize by size and type. Pro tip: dividers with labels save 3 AM fumbling in the dark.

Dressers, bookshelves, changing table - use anti-tip straps. A dresser falling is the #1 nursery danger. Takes 10 minutes per piece.

Blinds cords are a strangulation risk. Switch to cordless blinds or secure cords out of reach with cleats.

Use sliding outlet covers (not plug-in caps, which are choking hazards). Cover every outlet within 3 feet of the floor.

You'll generate a shocking amount of tiny laundry. A hamper in the room means fewer trips with spit-up clothes.

Infant Tylenol, gas drops, saline drops, nasal aspirator, thermometer, nail clippers. Keep it in a labeled bin on the shelf.

Water bottle, burp cloths, nursing pillow, phone charger - everything you need during 2 AM feeds in one spot.

High-contrast black and white patterns are best for newborn vision. Save the pastel stuff for 3+ months.

Mount securely out of reach. Remove it once baby can push up on hands and knees (around 5 months).

Board books from day one. Reading to your newborn builds neural connections even if they can't understand a word.

Soft surface for tummy time later. Make sure it's non-slip and machine washable - it will get bodily fluids on it.
