Call your insurance before falling in love with a practice. Out-of-network pediatric visits run $200-400 per visit. You'll have 6+ visits in the first year alone. Verify every doctor in the practice, not just one.
You'll make urgent sick visits on short notice with a screaming baby. A practice 10 minutes from home beats the "best" practice 40 minutes away. Factor in traffic at the times you'd typically visit.
Weekend and evening hours are a massive plus — babies don't get sick on a schedule. Ask specifically about Saturday availability and how late evening hours run. This can save you ER visits.
Ask explicitly: what happens when my baby has a 103F fever at midnight on a Sunday? Is there a nurse hotline? An on-call doctor? Or do they just say "go to the ER"? This answer matters a lot.
If baby needs to be hospitalized, your pediatrician should have privileges at a hospital with a pediatric unit near you. Ask which hospital and check that it's in your insurance network too.

Ask about typical wait times for both well visits and sick visits. 15-20 minutes is normal; 45+ minutes consistently means they're overbooked. Also ask about a separate sick waiting room to reduce infection spread.
Once you pick a pediatrician, notify your hospital/birthing center so they can send birth records directly. Call the practice to officially register as a patient before delivery.
Friendly, competent front desk staff make a stressful sick visit bearable. Rude or disorganized admin staff means scheduling nightmares and billing issues. Judge the office as a whole, not just the doctor.
Can they see your baby the same day when something urgent comes up? A practice that books 2-3 weeks out for sick visits isn't practical. You need same-day or next-day availability for acute issues.
A patient portal for messaging, lab results, vaccine records, and appointment scheduling is table stakes in 2026. If they're still fax-only, that's a sign the practice hasn't modernized.
At some point your baby may need a dermatologist, allergist, or developmental specialist. A well-connected pediatrician gets you fast referrals to trusted colleagues instead of a cold call to a random name.
Group practices mean your preferred doctor may not always be available. Ask: will I mostly see the same doctor? What happens if my doctor is out? Consistency matters for tracking your baby's development.
On-site lab for blood draws and quick tests saves a separate trip with a screaming baby. Ask if they can do strep tests, flu tests, and basic bloodwork in-office. This is a nice-to-have, not a must.
Schedule within 3-5 days of birth. They check weight (expect 5-7% loss — more than 10% is a concern), jaundice levels, and feeding. Write down questions in advance — you will forget them otherwise.
Confirm with both the hospital and the pediatrician's office that records will transfer automatically after birth. Follow up on day 2 to verify it happened. Lost records delay your newborn's first visit.
